My name is Simone Barclay.

I have worked as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) clinician since 2005, gaining formal Registration as a practitioner in 2006.

My philosophy is that most addictions or other harmful substance use patterns are rarely the primary problem. Rather they have become a (not very effective) ‘solution’ to the underlying issues from which they stem.

Therefore, the treatment I offer is results-focused with the ultimate goal being changing behaviour while at the same time identifying and healing painful underlying emotions.

I hold a First Class Honours Master’s degree in Psychology from Massey University and have worked in private practice and as a contract clinician to Waitemata DHB and Ahuru Lodge Recovery Retreat. In 2008, together with a colleague, I established Augustus Clinic; then Auckland’s only private Outpatient Programme for addiction.  I currently maintain a private practice, contract to several public and private health providers and serve as a Trustee on two charitable trust boards within the AOD sector.

I am entirely comfortable disclosing my own status as a former substance addict and have enjoyed a recovery of more than 25 years. I am a great proponent of the healing power of 12 Step programmes, however my formal training is primarily in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. I also incorporate elements of Mindfulness into my practice as a pathway to emotional healing. Mindfulness is a non-religious therapeutic technique which has been clinically proven to enhance psychological health.

Outside of work I enjoy skiing and snowboarding, restoring vintage furniture and spending time with family & friends. I am married and have ten-year-old twin sons.
